What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a discipline that combines medical knowledge with manual techniques to diagnose and treat any dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system i.e. the muscles, bones and joints of the body. Osteopathy is fully regulated and recognised by the medical profession. All practitioners must complete a validated 4-5 year degree and register with the General Osteopathic Council which sets and maintains high standards of professional practice.

Osteopathic treatment not only alleviates symptoms but seeks to identify and treat the root cause of pain. If the body is poorly aligned undue strain is placed upon it. If one area of the spine is stiff and restricted the adjacent joints will have to compensate and become overloaded. Osteopathic treatment seeks to enhance body mechanics by unlocking restricted joints and muscles, restoring muscle balance, and improving posture. This approach yields long term relief from your pain and reduces everyday wear and tear thus reducing degenerative change as you get older.
Your body’s tissues require a good circulation of blood and an intact nerve supply to attain and maintain optimum function. Osteopathic treatment improves circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid. Good nerve supply is promoted by ensuring nerves are not impinged as they emerge from the spine and pass through muscles and around joints. Treatment can therefore not only relieve your symptoms but support long term health.

Sports Massage Therapy

Sports massage is founded on classic Swedish massage that involves stroking, stretching and kneading of the muscles and tendons. A variety of additional techniques such as neuromuscular technique and muscle energy technique are employed to release muscular tension and increase flexibility and the treatment is therefore much more effective than a standard massage.

Muscle overuse due repetitive movements at work and within sports cause muscle fibres to become sticky, tangled and matted together. Micro tears in the muscle occur leading to an accumulation of scar tissue. Fluid exchange between the blood vessels and muscle tissue is compromised resulting is a build up of lactic acid and other toxins. Deep tissue sports massage breaks up scar tissue, untangles and realigns matted muscle fibres. Softening of muscles boosts tissue permeability and allows more fresh blood in and lets more toxins and wastes out.

Sports massage therapy can help athletes to increase recovery rates from training and injury. Regular therapy can prevent injury and improve sporting performance. Sports massage can help everyone reduce muscular tension, boost circulation and enhance relaxation and wellbeing.
