Osteopathy
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that improves the health and function the joints, muscles and spine. Treatment improves the function of the nervous, lymphatic and circulatory system.
Osteopathic treatment focuses both on your areas of pain and restriction and identifies and addresses the root cause of your problem. If one area of the body is tight and restricted or out of alignment other areas have to work harder to compensate. If for example your pelvis is rotated your spine will become distorted. If your chest muscles are tight, your shoulders become rounded and the muscles between the shoulder blades become overstretched and more prone to fatigue. By addressing both the symptoms and contributory factors of your pain osteopathic treatment provides long lasting pain relief and reduces wear and tear on the body potentially slowing down arthritic degenerative change.
What to Expect
At your first appointment you will be requested to fill out a health screening form to ensure that you receive a safe treatment. In order to formulate an accurate diagnosis your osteopath will:
- Take a case history of your presenting condition
- Perform a postural assessment
- Palpate and assess the condition of your muscles, tendons and ligaments
- Perform a movement analysis of your spine and joints
- Undertake appropriate special tests to aid diagnosis
Clothing. In order to be assessed you will be asked to undress. Therefore either wear appropriate and modest underwear or feel free to wear shorts and a sports bra/vest top.
Treatment. Once a diagnosis has been established treatment can begin. Different hands of techniques will be used to improve body function and alleviate your pain.
- Massage to release muscular tension
- Stetches to enchance flexibility
- Osteopathic joint articulation and manipulation to unlock restricted joints
- Pumping techniques to improve circulation and remove inflammation and toxins from your tissues
- Nerve stretches and releases to decompress trapped nerves
